Birthday Wishes For One Of Fashion’s Best Talents

url

It is always a big deal when Trudi calls your agent to bring you in for polaroids. Things are probably going very well for you in terms of a modeling career when that phone call comes. This is the woman who advised Anna Wintour as the new faces editor at Vogue, which means Trudi knows better than your mom if you’ll make it in the business or not.  And, if you do have a chance, she’s the person that understands exactly what it will take to shape you into the next Giselle or Karolina Kurkova, who she managed during her time at DNA model management.

Trudi was one of the people in fashion that believed in my talent. She first introduced me to Anna and later represented me at DNA. What a relief if was to walk into my new agency and see Trudi sitting there. I knew I’d be in good hands with her on my side. I’m forever grateful for the guidance and support Trudi has given me over the years.

If you’re wondering if you’ve got what it takes or you want to hear more from Trudi herself, you’ve got a few options to connect with her.

Trudi Tapscott Tells It Like It Is At Vogue, DNA And How To Make A Supermodel!!!

url-1Yesterday I interviewed fashion legend Trudi Tapscott.  And here’s why she’s a legend… this woman discovered and developed many of the faces you’ve come to recognize in the pages of Vogue and blue chip advertising. Yep.  She develops Supermodels before the world or even fashion knows they exist.   You’ve heard of Giselle and Karolina Kurkova. She knows the business inside and out. Here’s the thing, if the midas touch was actually a thing, this woman has it. Every talent she touches turns to gold.

Have a listen as Trudi and I cover her career trajectory, her days at Vogue, how she develops models and what it takes for a girl to make it in the industry. There was so much to cover we’ll be having her on again to discuss in depth scouting, development and how Trudi views some of the challenges models currently face.

Ondria Hardin: The Use of The Underage Model

Ondria Hardin is the latest fresh faced newcomer model. Her youth is being taken advantage of as well her image is quickly becoming the face of fashion hypocrasy.

The latest news is that she’s been cast for the SS 13 Chanel campaign alongside veteran model Stella Tennant.  “She doesn’t look 15,” Lagerfeld told the trade WWD. “She looks 18 or 19.”  And that, my friends, is reason enough to use an underage model.  It’ll be interesting to see if Vogue accepts advertising money from Chanel and runs the ads regardless.  The flip-flop eithics of fashion in Ondria’s case is disturbing.

At 14 she walked the Marc Jacobs show which violated the CFDA’s highly praised Health Initiative.   Marc said that it was a creative decision.

Chinese Vogue, who had also publicly announced they wouldn’t show models under the age of 16 in any of their magazines,  also made an exception when they decided to use the 15 year old model in their August issue.  They later apologized saying her agents lied and said she was 16.

So, what happened?  Everyone was all hopped up publicly stating they would protect underage girls from doing a job that is agreed unhealthy for a young psyche.  These decisions to ignore the new regulations, coming mere months after the signing, makes me wonder, who is everyone protecting?  The model or the money?  Most in fashion do their best to protect models.  They celebrate beauty and celebrate individuality.  So this all confuses me.  Marc, Karl, the editors at Vogue, etc… I’ve been in the room with them and they’re not evil people.  I believe the system is broken.  Perhaps the intention that they system was created on as well.

It seems appropriate for say, dELiAs to use 14 year old teens but when the same teens are used to sell Chanel, Prada and Marc Jacobs, well, not only is it weird, it’s irresponsible.  What using young girls for adult advertising does is places the most risk upon those who are the most vulnerable in the economic equation, the models and the women they advertise to.  The designer, the editor, the agent and the magazine all get to enjoy the benefits of using such a young face. But what about this girl’s perception and now expectations of herself or what it’s doing to the perception and expectations of many women?

Trudi Tapscott: Fashion’s Powerful Model Advocate

We all have that person in our lives that steps up to the plate and advocates when no one else does.  If we’re lucky, we have more than one. Trudi Tapscott has taken advocating to a whole new level.

I first met Trudi walking into Vogue’s offices.  I was meant to meet directly with Anna but when I showed up the office told me to go to Trudi’s office first.

Sarah Jessica Parker – Not a Style Icon

How much money do you think the studios paid to put Sarah Jessica Parker on the cover of Vogue?  I’ll tell you why I ask, I’d like to know how little Vogue is willing to accept to give Sarah Jessica Parker the credit that Patricia Field deserves.
Sarah Jessica Parker is not the fashion icon Anna Wintour and all the other fashion business heads want you to believe.

Oh, For Crying Out Loud! (These 2 Look AWESOME!)

I was so happy to be back in New York today, more specifically, the lower east side.  LES.  Ahhhhh… I felt comforted smelling the LES air.  It reminded me of when I didn’t have to spend 2 1/2 hours at night trying to get my child to sleep.  Which, he normally does, but this past week with jet lag, teething, brain growth, etc… he’s a very light sleeper.  It’s so frustrating.  I filled him full of medication last night, anything that would make him sleep.  And I was upset when I decided the “get-your-child-drunk-enough-to-pass-out” time had finally arrived when I realized the wine my friend was drinking was gone.  Empty.  My child has still not been drunk, but many have told me the wonders of whiskey when dealing with children that won’t sleep.

I ended up walking him around in a stroller for an hour, then passed him off to my husband to deal with.  When he finally fell asleep in the stroller, we just let him stay there, terrified, yes, actually terrified of picking him up to lay him in his bed.  It’s no wonder so many of my mommy friends rely on xanax to get through the first 5 years.  Unfortunately massive doses of xanax aren’t going to work for me.  I’ll die. But kudos to the moms who have the balls to ask their psychiatrists for xanax.  I don’t know many that would appreciate the special stress created when you’re not able to get your little bundle of heaving, irritable, screaming joy to calm down and rest.

I do, however, have the balls to take photos of strangers in the streets.  I stopped these two below to take snap shots of their outfits. Continue reading
