Fan Quarterly Asks Thought Provoking Questions

Fan Quarterly: You said the fashion industry is undergoing a change in its approach to modeling. What do you mean by that?

Emily Sandberg: With the CFDA releasing The Health Initiative in 2012 and beginning the process of curtailing the use of underage  models, we are turning a corner toward a healthier and more realistic image for women to be inspired by.  Many women have spoken out — including models like myself and Sara Ziff, Anne Van Dijk and Natalia Vodianova.

It isn’t perfect, but it is happening.Agents, designers and editors are all working together to create a more diverse and realistic presentation of beauty.  In the next 2-5 years, we will be seeing more age-appropriate  and ethnically diverse models, as well as more size-appropriate models. It took quite a few years for the industry to shift the aesthetic of the models of the 90′s to the models of today.  It takes time, but those who are involved are aware and working toward prioritizing health.  The energy it takes for a model to starve and workout and focus on attaining an unsustainable body size takes away from the ability to perform and sustain longevity.

It’s sad how much I had to focus on weight instead of enjoying being 18 and experiencing this spectacular opportunity to its fullest; and how the fear of being an inch too big took away from my ability to do my job — and to project confidence, personality and strength.  That’s the message I’d like the industry to hear.  When we create and accept an unsustainable, unhealthy environment and image for models, girls and woman, we all lose.  DKNY_Emily_Sandberg_3

A month ago I was asked to give an interview with Fan Quarterly. It’s an online source for all things celebrity. The questions were centered around my time in the fashion industry and what changes are currently underway for a healthier image for women to be inspired by.

I enjoyed answering but also realized that this is a conversation that I would love to hear all of you weight in on. Let me know in your comments what changes you’d like to see happen and your perspective on the current culture in fashion.

The interview can be read in full here.

Whoopsie Marc, Did Jacobs Make an Error?

These two girls are 14. I love Marc.  For one, he’s not afraid to stir the pot.  For another, he’s not afraid to break a few rules.

I would expect this from him.  Of course he’ll use a 14 year old.  If only for the reason someone told him he wasn’t supposed to.  However, it does make me wonder… Continue reading

Johnny Weir Show Us Behind the Scenes For MAC!

This makes me so excited for the collection that’s out… now! Woot! Get busy shopping. The globes make perfect stocking stuffers and who doesn’t love glitter? I rarely wear it, but I’ve got my own personal stash and I love having it in my rotation.

For those who don’t know… MAC is known for having the best pigments. You can mix and match. Apply it dry or add a little water or grease to create a different look. Super fun to play with.

Oh, and can someone please tell me where I can purchase that gorgeous glass mohawk Johnny has in his hair?

90 Year Old Iris Apfel Collaborates With MAC

It’s never too late to sign a beauty contract.  Textile maven turned socialite has inked a deal with MAC cosmetics and will be turning heads in the new campaign coming out January 5.

Snatch up the gorgeous jewel tones before they sell out.  Iris, who has referred to herself time and again as a ‘rare bird’, has chosen to name all the colors after rare birds.

Well… this is a breath of fresh air.  I LOVE seeing a fierce woman selling what we all love: beauty, personality and lipstick!  Go Iris! Go MAC!  Show the rest of them how its done.  Do you think the other mega cosmetic companies will be able to keep up with her?
