Where To Go For Oscar ReCap

imgresIt’s that time of the year again when I simply guess who’s going to win awards on all the ballots presented at each years Oscar party. It’s not difficult, you just have to tune into the “vibes” on tabloid sites and magazine covers to get an idea of who’s headed to the podium.

Sometimes there’s an upset but usually Hollywood is as predictable as your high school prom king and queen announcement.

Regardless, I LOVE seeing all the galm and red carpet entrances. It’s fun to watch Hollywood stars look casual and stress free in gorgeous gowns that are being scrutinized and judged the second they step out of the limo. They have to sell it or their stylist loses her job (not really, but you get the pressure)

The other part I love to see is when the winners are announced. You do get to see a brief moment of true humanity if the camera can catch the glance, the divert of the eye, milliseconds to a smile and appreciative applause for the winner.

add2Next week, I’ve called on expert Ted Gibson to break down the Oscars. We’re going to talk about the fashion, the hair and of course the eye diverts and upsets. You can listen Wednesday following the Oscars at 1 pm EST on Matters of Today.

Riley Needs Our Help: Please Read And Share

url

Somerdale - A four-year-old boy named Riley O’Brien needs a heart and two lungs transplanted as soon as possible. In fact, he’s needed the transplant for his entire life, starting before he was even born.

During his mother’s 22 week pregnancy checkup, the doctor realized there was a problem. Carol O’Brien’s baby boy was diagnosed with Heterotaxy Syndrome and Congenital heart disease before he was even born. Naturally, the O’Brien’s were devastated with this diagnosis. “Our son had a 50% survival rate” Carol O’Brien said.

Happy Valentines Day… 4 Fun Facts

photo 2Happy Valentine’s Day from SupermodelCentral!

So before Hallmark took over Valentine’s Day, there was a whole other world to get involved in. I thought it’d be fun to do a little google research into the meaning and history of Valentine’s Day.

Here’s some of the fun facts I found on wikipedia.

  1. Saint Valentine’s head was preserved in the abbey of New Minster, Winchester, and venerated. -Wiki  Yep, people in Winchester have a head preserved that they hold in great esteem. Now that’s love.
  2. Bishop Demetri of the Orthodox Research Institute, in a keynote address, states that “St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D, a time when the church was enduring great persecution. His ministry was to help the Christians to escape this persecution, and to provide them the sacraments, such as marriage, which was outlawed by the Roman Empire at that time. – Wiki  See… there was a time when gay AND straight people couldn’t marry. Imagine that?!? How unbilblical.
  3. In 1797 Victorian’s were considered prudish. A British publisher created anonymous valentines for people to send. -Wiki This is commonly known as the era of stalking. See internet? You’re not the first to hide behind a profile.
  4. In Taiwan the situation is the reverse of Japan’s. Men give gifts to women on Valentine’s Day, and women return them on White Day. -Wiki Guess who’s getting Marshmallows this year!

Hope you all have a sweet V-day and a beautiful rest of your evening. No matter who you’re with, no matter where you are tonight, know that you’re never alone. Aw heck… if you are cold and lonely… at least your head isn’t preserved in an abbey.photo 1

So You Said You Want A Fashion Party??? How About An APE Epic?

Yes. Fashion needs more of this.

Yes. Fashion needs more of this.

Are you at fashion week right now? Have you been to any good parties? Are you feeling like you are missing out?

I’m here to tell you: Yes, yes you are missing out. That’s ok.  So are 2 other people. Just kidding… even Jesus himself couldn’t stand the New York show schedule and be everywhere.

But, allow me to tell you where Jesus would party with you if He had been in town. Thursday night an epic APE fashion party to kick off F/W2013 NY Fashion Week went down. Word is, the door was packed with people waiting for someone to come out so they could get in.  And some waited so long, they actually got hungry.  Imagine fashion peeps getting hungry… doesn’t seem possible does it? It doesn’t even sound plausable that anyone would wait that long to be let in on a snowy night. But it happened. The beats were bangin’ it was going down party poppin’

New York editorial and Victoria Secret’s photographer Ben Watts knows how to throw a party.  Check out the pic in the gallery below.  Boyfriend took it there.

Yeah. This is how you know you've just killed it in fashion. Every man worth their salt has a finale worth lighting up at the end.

Tim Dodd Captures Magic In New York

washington-DC-8443-web

Photo: Tim Dodd

Photographer Tim Dodd made the journey to the top of the Empire State Building January 28th with his girlfriend.  Weather turned and his girlfriend decided to stay warm shopping.  But Tim? He continued on into the blustery cold day and up to the tippy-top of the iconic New York building.  Half-way up Tim tried to skirt security but they took his tripod. Oh-NO! Now what would Tim use to capture the city?

This is where most of us would have patted ourselves on the back, shrugged our shoulders and made our way back to the streets to warm up with a pretzel and hot chocolate.  But Tim, he’s a courageous and determined man. Yes, Tim braved the cold winter moving in on his previously crisp and clear picture perfect day and continued on.  At the top with camera in hand and gusts of wind blowing and snow, clouds and fog beginning to settle onto the city, Tim used the handrail as a tripod and took the most magical photo of New York that any human has ever laid eyes on in all the history of the universe.

Here it is. New York on a winter day.

MC Farine Shares Her Grief And Love For Noah Pozner

DSC_0990-Aug.14.2010

Photo of Noah from MC Farine’s blog

MC Farine has taken to her blog dedicated to artisan breads and all things doughy to process her grief.  Her grandchild, Noah, is one of the children our country lost in the Sandy Hook massacre. On Dec 14 Farine posted a brief message on her blog excusing herself from any more bread posts.  Since then Farine’s blog has documented her process of grief.  At points it’s difficult to read, her writings are open, honest and often times heart breaking.  There are also moments of hope and solidarity as she documents new communities forming, support from unknown sources and the circle of love Noah has left behind him to help support the grieving family and friends.

Farine’s latest blog post documents her first steps back into the world. Her description of loneliness is isolating, chilling and poignant.

‘As if my whole being was a huge invisible bruise the world couldn’t avoid bumping against.’

Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah All!

Every year around Christmas I reflect on the previous year in preparation for a new beginning and every year there is much to be grateful for.  Today I found myself flat on my back in a Bikram yoga class sweating, dizzy and contemplating.  Why was I doing Bikram yoga on Christmas Eve?  I was doing my best to keep pace with the class and not pass out.  That’s what I was doing.  I show up for these types of self care activities today (even if they fall on a holiday) because, well, I just think it’s better for everyone I interact with if I make even an ounce of effort.  You know?Christmastree1.jpg

Surprising to me, the times I have most gratitude for are the times I overcame and discovered new solutions.  The challenges I faced, the struggles I chose to take on, and those other struggles who decided to take me on all provided lessons from which I can grow.

The most important gift I want to give my son and our family is the gift of spiritual growth through practicing gratitude and patience.  For it is because of these trials that I can gain insight and discover new character building solutions. I can’t think of a more fundamental reason to celebrate.  And so, in an effort to illustrate this gift of spiritual cleansing through patience and gratitude, I thought a fun family bath would do nicely.  My camera shy husband, Gary Gold, is there in the background, kindly taking the photo. Thanks babe for letting me drag you into this Christmas bath! photo
