Girl Model: Director Ashley Sabin’s Interview With Craig Palmer

Craig Palmer founder of The Cultural Omnivore spoke with Ashley Sabin, one of the directors from Girl Model, the documentary that is causing quite a stir in fashion at the moment.  I’ll be having a live conversation on Matters of Today with Ashley on April 17 at 1 pm EST to go over the current controversies being discussed in regards to this film.

Craig’s interview gives us a lay of the land and why the topics of modeling, prostitution, scouting and isolation all came together for one film.

INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG
I recently spoke with filmmaker Ashley Sabin about her latest documentary Girl Model, a film that documents the fashion industries supply-chain between Siberia, Japan and the United States as told through the experiences of scouts, agencies and 13-year-old model Nadya Vall.  The film contrasts the innocence of Russian model Nadya against jaded model cum scout Ashley Abraugh in a film that is equally disturbing as it is engaging.

What motivated you to make the film Girl Model?

In 2007 Ashley Arbaugh the scout in the documentary approached us with the idea of making a film.  Her idea was to make a film about modeling and prostitution Continue reading

Roger Frampton – Witness The Fitness

Model and personal trainer Roger Frampton is taking a fresh approach to fitness without the use of gyms and weights.  His Re-Model-Me personal training has been employed by everyone from designer Patrick Cox to Ryan Barrett as he fronted Versace’s underwear campaign.  Roger’s approach is accessible and tailored to each individuals needs and goals without employing fad diets and gimmicks.  Craig Palmer spoke with Roger about his philosophy on fitness and his goals for the future in this insightful look into the world of  personal fitness.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to embark on a fitness regime that may be daunted by the idea?

The best advice I could give to someone wanting to start any fitness regime would be to not run before they can walk.  There is a lot of hype in the media e.g. “Get ripped in 12 weeks”.  It is not really like that.  It is a journey that never ends.  It’s important the individual learns to work with their body.

What is your philosophy on wellness and fitness?

Personally, I am very open-minded, as is our company. People want a simple answer, but there is none, and I believe the day we realize that there is no answer we can actually start to enjoy life more.

James Gatenby: Recently Discovered Louis Vuitton Model

James Gatenby is represented by Priscilla’s in Australia and right now he’s preparing to sign with agencies in Europe and New York. Every agent worth his salt is currently drooling hoping that James will sign with them.  In the world of male modeling it’s rare that we see a name or face rise above the rest. James is making strides however with his recent opening of Louis Vuitton exclusively for F/W 2013.  All eyes are currently on him hoping that he’ll continue his ascent while maintaining sanity.  All of us at SupermodelCentral are hoping the same!  Follow James on Twitter

Craig Palmer interviewed James to give all of us an inside look at a male model’s rise to success.

How were you discovered?

I tried a new hair stylist, and it just so happened he worked for GQ. At first I thought they were just being nice when they said “You should be a model.” Surely they said that to every customer, right? Then it turned out they were serious and had booked me an interview at Priscilla’s (my mother agency).

You studied Biochemistry at university. How do you think this changes people’s perception of you as a model?

People usually do a double-take when I say I studied Science, it does seem a bit contrary to a pursuit like modelling.  Hopefully they then realize that models can have passions besides modelling, we aren’t just one-dimensional. Some people don’t realize that a lot of models study even while modelling. They could be future doctors, lawyers or business owners.

How did you feel when you were booked to open exclusively for Louis Vuitton? …for more continue reading on Craig’s site: The Cultural Omnivore. Continue reading

Trudi Tapscott Tells It Like It Is At Vogue, DNA And How To Make A Supermodel!!!

url-1Yesterday I interviewed fashion legend Trudi Tapscott.  And here’s why she’s a legend… this woman discovered and developed many of the faces you’ve come to recognize in the pages of Vogue and blue chip advertising. Yep.  She develops Supermodels before the world or even fashion knows they exist.   You’ve heard of Giselle and Karolina Kurkova. She knows the business inside and out. Here’s the thing, if the midas touch was actually a thing, this woman has it. Every talent she touches turns to gold.

Have a listen as Trudi and I cover her career trajectory, her days at Vogue, how she develops models and what it takes for a girl to make it in the industry. There was so much to cover we’ll be having her on again to discuss in depth scouting, development and how Trudi views some of the challenges models currently face.

Beverly Johnson and Carol Alt Speak Model Language! (Interview with Terry Gross/NPR)

The pressures on models and young women is becoming more and more mainstream and acceptable to talk about.  I’m excited.  Not that there’s obvious abuse going on, but there is a clean up job that needs to take place around how we develop the psyche’s of these young women we applaud for being bone thin, tall and photogenic. It takes a lot more than the outsides to be an awesome model, my hope is the industry will eventually place the focus on the talent of modeling and remove from the glare of physical perfection.  The impossible to maintain standard is dangerous.

Terry Gross interview Beverly Johnson and Carol Alt for the release of HBO’s new documentary film About Face: The Supermodels Then and Now.  Timothy Greenfield-Sanders directs.  Listen to Getting Old Is Hard, Even (And Especially) For Models

Here’s an expert:

GROSS: Were you considered chubby or is it just the fashion world that thought of you as overweight? Continue reading

Sebastian Sauve: The Male Supermodel

Sebastian Sauve is the newest male model on the rise.  He tweets, he Facebooks and he’s got a blog that features his photography and life.  It’s definitely a look into what happens backstage and on set with male models.  A lot of beautifully candid photos of male models being male. Sebastian is entering into the realms of supermodel-dom.  This is a kid that puts it out there and doesn’t apologize later.  He’s got a freshly beat attitude and is known in the industry for being a sweetheart.  Craig Palmer and I caught up with him and asked a few questions…

Sebastian Sauve

As a creative director for ODDA, what do you think is unique about the point of view of your magazine?

By chance I was involved in an interview much like this one and got talking to the interviewee afterward. He shared an idea with me that got us talking. We then developed a business plan and put our team together and BOOM!; ODDA’s your uncle. It’s a fresh idea trying to look at the other side of fashion. We are unique in that we touch on all things fashion and show the inner workings of the industry.

What do you think is the biggest misconception about modeling?

I think the biggest misconception is that it pays a lot. I’d say male models earn about 10 percent compared to their female counterparts. Although it really depends on the person and the job. In addition to modeling you helped create a magazine and run a blog that had 60K hits in two months.

How has branding been integral to your career development and what are your future plans?

Hey, it’s all in the marketing; Professional bullshit. Modeling is a game. It’s a profession for sure, but you still have to bullshit your way to the top, much like Monopoly. In terms of my career it’s quite separate, but they do aid each other somewhat. I have future plans to expand and take over the whole world of course.

Do you feel male models are subject to the same scrutiny as female models and how do you deal with pressures of the business?

Definitely not. Male models have it easy in comparison because there’s not nearly as much pressure. I get almost none since I’m lucky enough to not get any pressure. I’m 25 and more experienced in life so people tend not to fuck with me the way they do they younglings.

What has been the highlight of your career thus far?

Actually having a career. Oh, and having a bag named after me is awesome.

Pete Sepenuk: Chasing Beauty

Pete Sepenuk and director Brent Huff made a documentary about fashion and everyone must see it. I spent an hour talking with Pete about it a month ago.  He and I discussed the business of fashion.  Let me tell you, I was totally surprised.  Having lived in Los Angeles for a number of years, I’d come to expect a certain level of understanding about the fashion business and the inner workings of it.  That understanding typically goes no deeper than Continue reading

Alizah Greenberg: The Cool Coast Jeweler

I breathed a sigh of relief when I first met Alizah.  She was home in a city where I knew hardly anyone.  I didn’t know her but her style and her presence brought me back to a sensibility I understood.  She’s got the coasts in her.  Her style is cool, eclectic and refined.  I took notice and approached.  I had to find out more.  Beyond the cool she had the most amazing accessories I’ve seen.  I wanted to own every piece she was wearing.  And so I asked the impolite question of where did you find them?  What’s the story? I found out that she had designed most of them herself.  And so, I had to follow up and share my discovery with all of you.

Alizah is a jewelry designer.  Her pieces are exquisite and raw.  Cool class.  Craig Palmer and I spoke with Alizah to find out more. Continue reading
