Girl Model: Director Ashley Sabin’s Interview With Craig Palmer

Craig Palmer founder of The Cultural Omnivore spoke with Ashley Sabin, one of the directors from Girl Model, the documentary that is causing quite a stir in fashion at the moment.  I’ll be having a live conversation on Matters of Today with Ashley on April 17 at 1 pm EST to go over the current controversies being discussed in regards to this film.

Craig’s interview gives us a lay of the land and why the topics of modeling, prostitution, scouting and isolation all came together for one film.

INTERVIEW WITH CRAIG
I recently spoke with filmmaker Ashley Sabin about her latest documentary Girl Model, a film that documents the fashion industries supply-chain between Siberia, Japan and the United States as told through the experiences of scouts, agencies and 13-year-old model Nadya Vall.  The film contrasts the innocence of Russian model Nadya against jaded model cum scout Ashley Abraugh in a film that is equally disturbing as it is engaging.

What motivated you to make the film Girl Model?

In 2007 Ashley Arbaugh the scout in the documentary approached us with the idea of making a film.  Her idea was to make a film about modeling and prostitution Continue reading

Roger Frampton – Witness The Fitness

Model and personal trainer Roger Frampton is taking a fresh approach to fitness without the use of gyms and weights.  His Re-Model-Me personal training has been employed by everyone from designer Patrick Cox to Ryan Barrett as he fronted Versace’s underwear campaign.  Roger’s approach is accessible and tailored to each individuals needs and goals without employing fad diets and gimmicks.  Craig Palmer spoke with Roger about his philosophy on fitness and his goals for the future in this insightful look into the world of  personal fitness.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to embark on a fitness regime that may be daunted by the idea?

The best advice I could give to someone wanting to start any fitness regime would be to not run before they can walk.  There is a lot of hype in the media e.g. “Get ripped in 12 weeks”.  It is not really like that.  It is a journey that never ends.  It’s important the individual learns to work with their body.

What is your philosophy on wellness and fitness?

Personally, I am very open-minded, as is our company. People want a simple answer, but there is none, and I believe the day we realize that there is no answer we can actually start to enjoy life more.

James Gatenby: Recently Discovered Louis Vuitton Model

James Gatenby is represented by Priscilla’s in Australia and right now he’s preparing to sign with agencies in Europe and New York. Every agent worth his salt is currently drooling hoping that James will sign with them.  In the world of male modeling it’s rare that we see a name or face rise above the rest. James is making strides however with his recent opening of Louis Vuitton exclusively for F/W 2013.  All eyes are currently on him hoping that he’ll continue his ascent while maintaining sanity.  All of us at SupermodelCentral are hoping the same!  Follow James on Twitter

Craig Palmer interviewed James to give all of us an inside look at a male model’s rise to success.

How were you discovered?

I tried a new hair stylist, and it just so happened he worked for GQ. At first I thought they were just being nice when they said “You should be a model.” Surely they said that to every customer, right? Then it turned out they were serious and had booked me an interview at Priscilla’s (my mother agency).

You studied Biochemistry at university. How do you think this changes people’s perception of you as a model?

People usually do a double-take when I say I studied Science, it does seem a bit contrary to a pursuit like modelling.  Hopefully they then realize that models can have passions besides modelling, we aren’t just one-dimensional. Some people don’t realize that a lot of models study even while modelling. They could be future doctors, lawyers or business owners.

How did you feel when you were booked to open exclusively for Louis Vuitton? …for more continue reading on Craig’s site: The Cultural Omnivore. Continue reading

Trudi Tapscott Tells It Like It Is At Vogue, DNA And How To Make A Supermodel!!!

url-1Yesterday I interviewed fashion legend Trudi Tapscott.  And here’s why she’s a legend… this woman discovered and developed many of the faces you’ve come to recognize in the pages of Vogue and blue chip advertising. Yep.  She develops Supermodels before the world or even fashion knows they exist.   You’ve heard of Giselle and Karolina Kurkova. She knows the business inside and out. Here’s the thing, if the midas touch was actually a thing, this woman has it. Every talent she touches turns to gold.

Have a listen as Trudi and I cover her career trajectory, her days at Vogue, how she develops models and what it takes for a girl to make it in the industry. There was so much to cover we’ll be having her on again to discuss in depth scouting, development and how Trudi views some of the challenges models currently face.

On Beauty From Marie Stopes: Birth Control Advocate

You can take no credit for beauty at sixteen. But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soul’s own doing. – Marie Stopes

FileMarie_Stopes_in_her_laboratory,_1904Marie Stopes, an author and one of Britain’s first advocates for women’s rights and a pioneer in the field of birth control.  As a matter of fact, she and her husband Humphry Verdon Roe found the first birth control clinic in Britain in March of 1921. Also she wrote a book Married Love or Love in Marriage when hers was falling apart.  That book became a best seller; publishers could hardly keep it in print. Yeah, that’s right. The first year there were 5 editions released. Wow. Right? This is someone whom when told she couldn’t legally get a divorce, read legal papers and documents to find a way.  And she did. She legally divorced in 1913 on the stand that the marriage had never been consummated. So basically, she’s bad-ass.

Now, onto the quote I chose for today. The idea that one can take no credit for ones  beauty at sixteen is confusing for a lot of models. Most people assume that modeling is simply being genetically blessed and while that is definitely a part of a model’s success there is still an entire different skill set that makes a model “a model.”  And most girls don’t realize they have it.

So, when a model doesn’t understand what it is that makes her a model, then the craft of modeling gets lost in the pursuit to “stay beautiful.” Many many models and actresses fall into this category and their careers end before they reach their prime.

Beyond this, most agents, photographer and editors don’t understand why one girl is awesome and another falls flat.  Modeling schools don’t understand this either.  Currently there is no support for models to cultivate the craft of modeling and it becomes a game of hit or miss.

Those that have innately figured it out or have been fortunate enough to have longer careers that have afforded them the time it takes to hone in on the talent and craft it find a beauty that is everlasting, mesmerizing and awe-inspiring.

So, what is this craft of modeling I speak of? It’s difficult to fit in all into one blog post.  Most simply put it is the ability to capture a feeling and process through the filter of image and project it back out to be captured.

I speak of this process to shine a light on Stopes’ second half of the quote: But if you are beautiful at sixty, it will be your soul’s own doing.

And this is where the craft of modeling transcends into art. Once a model is able to craft an image, the challenge becomes constructing a framework to project their soul into.  And this is where we find true beauty.

Because you see, it doesn’t really matter if one is a conventional beauty. What matters is the self awareness, emotional control and an ability to access one’s soul and spirituality.

Gah! So yes. All of us can be a model. And all of us are beautiful and all of us need not be afraid to practice our beauty today. Go ahead, try it.  Find yours and express it!

Donna Karan and Anjelica Huston

BFA_5237_601709-300x420

Yay!!! Two women, each formidable in their respective industries, joined together by a mutual friend who happens to be one of the 5 greatest voices of the 20th Century, have combined forces in the name of hosiery.

I’m talking about Anjelica Huston, Donna Karan and Barbara Streisand.  The new hosiery commercial for Donna was conceived and directed by Anjelica Huston, starring Felicity Jones and Smash’s Jack Davenport.

There is nothing I love more than seeing women supporting women and then creating super intelligent content.  I’m gonna go ahead and say it.  We got this 2013. This is our year to shine on!
