Oh Hell No! Former Australian Vogue Editor, Kirstie Clements Tells Us Things We NEVER Suspected!

article-2302957-056C8C380000044D-188_306x487 article-2302957-190CED79000005DC-256_306x487So much attention is being placed on Kirstie Clements right now about a book she wrote  and a lot of the attention is being focused on her getting fired last May from her 25 year position at editor-in-chief of Australian Vogue. Which I understand because the short bio of Kristie on the cover says “From front desk to Editor” So, yeah, I can see why we’re focused on her getting fired but really, I can’t imagine that buying editorial spreads from US Vogue could be inspiring after a certain number of years, say 1 or 2.  Pretty much, I would say that while at times it was probably fun to say you were the editor-in-chief at Australian Vogue, it probably also became annoying to be the head of the “Vogue from down-under.”

Now, we don’t hear much about Australian Vogue but apparently there were some sick things going on behind closed doors that no one suspected.  As a matter of fact, Kristie tell us that this is an industry problem. Her tell-all book is called The Vogue Factor.  In it she describes the horrendous methods models use to keep their weight down. Like feeding tubes and eating tissue. What the hell.

Nobody in their right mind watches girls eat tissues and be put on feeding tubes and continues to turn a blind eye while making money buying spreads for their magazine featuring these girls.  Who would do that? In any other business, I’m pretty sure you would get fired. Oh, um, nevermind.

At any rate, big surprise, models starve themselves. They don’t eat for days at a time. In order to make this brief I thought I’d share with you some of the methods used by models to stay thin and also some of the ones not used.

TYPICALLY USED TO LOSE WEIGHT

1. Juice fast

2. Exercise

3. Diets

4. Supplements: vitamins, minerals, metabolism

5. Bulimia (never a good idea and it doesn’t really work anyways)

6. Rehabs for eating disorders

7. Moving around from country to country (stress burns calories)

8. Boot camps

9. Illicit drugs

10. Plastic surgery or fasting spas

WAYS TO LOSE WEIGHT THAT ARE NOT USED:

1. Feeding tubes

2. Eating tissue

3. Eating cotton balls (I don’t care which model said it happened, it was probably a joke an intern made)

4. Starving to the point of passing out. (Ok, I did see that once. But it was rare and her agents got her help)

Trust me, the girls that you don’t see eating on set were going home to eat. The pressure to stay thin becomes a strange set of unspoken rules of when it’s ok to eat and when it’s not ok. At any rate, WHY DIDN’T KRISTIE SAY SOMETHING WHILE IT WAS HAPPENING????

Now, for another reality check. The agents I worked with sent girls to get help when they were having a difficult time losing weight, developing unhealthy habits, hurting themselves with substances and having breakdowns. It’s a tough business and some do slip through the cracks but for the most part, agents are supportive and do everything they can to help girls with legit eating disorders or substance abuse problems. It’s not something that goes unnoticed.

Also I’m also confused about the title: THE VOGUE FACTOR. What does that mean? It should be made clear that Anna Wintour herself sent a model to rehab for eating disorders and then had her write an article about it to bring awareness about the problem. And she did that while she was in office.  She also started the yearly body issue and age issue.  Anna has also stepped up as a huge supported of the health initiative and has begun conversations with leading experts in the field of nutrition to help solve this epidemic in the industry. So, my question is what Vogue factor is Kristie referring to?  Her own?

Everyone in the industry is aware that it isn’t perfect so why this book needed to be written is unclear to me.  Of course, it is salacious and intriguing but really, who cares how big models are or how they stay so slender?  I’m personally interested in the topic because I was one of those models that had a very difficult time staying thin. But forget my personal interest in the size of a mode, isn’t the real issue here about the messaging we’re sending out? Shouldn’t it be based on fact?

The main thing that Kristie Clements’ book tells me is that she saw a problem going on and for a quarter of a century and turned a blind eye to it. Why? If it’s even true that girls were hooked into feeding tubes and eating tissue, why wait 25 years before you speak up? The industry need solutions not spankings.

Kate Upton Has A Body Malfunction At 20 Degrees BELOW Zero

url-2

“It was freezing,” Upton, 20, told NBC’s morning TV show “Today” on Tuesday. “I’m from Florida, so it wasn’t easy for me. When I came back, I was losing my hearing and eyesight. My body was shutting down because it was working so hard to keep me warm.”

You guys, she was LOSING HER SIGHT AND HEARING. Being that cold is no joke. It’s probably not something your doctor or any sane person would advise.  But, if you want to experience the Upton challenge, step outside in a bikini today and walk (no cheating by running) around the block.  Throw on a bathrobe for 5-10 minutes and then do it again. Repeat for at least 3 hours. Half way thought the challenge spritz your self down with a little water to get the below zero feeling. Stay cheerful and look warm and sexy and happy the entire time. Do this 7 days in a row and you’ll get an idea of what Kate just went through.

At some point you’ll ask yourself if it’s actually worth it or medically safe to continue this exercise. If you’re wise, you will probably stop.  However if you are offered a cover of S.I. Swimsuit issue with a team of people and an incredible amount of money already invested in your delivering images worthy of a cover, you may hesitate to pull out and go home. It’s a predicament that most models have faced at some point in their career.  Those who put themselves at risk of death are applauded and those models get to talk about how unglamorous the job it.  Those that take care of themselves are pretty much guaranteed to never work with the client or photographer’s team again.url-3

Kate doing an amazing job looking warm and sunny

Years ago, there was a union created to protect  talent in these moments for the very reason that it’s difficult to balance creative decisions and physical well being without risking your career. Basic necessities such as food and a heater were required to be on sets. This union is SAG, the Screen Actor’s Guild.  The conflict of interests that Upton perhaps found herself in would already have been mitigated if there was an effective union in place to protect models. url-1

Kate Upton models a itsy bitsy teeny bikini while holding a giant Oreo cookie with ear muffs on, while the team around her is covered head to toe in arctic gear.

I’ve been on sets numerous times wearing less clothing than appropriate for the conditions.  Minus my agent’s or the client’s protection, I had a few solutions for dealing with less than ideal freezing shooting conditions. I would drink whiskey to numb me and keep me warm. I would psychologically remove myself from my body while keeping a smile on my face.  I would apologetically request a coat to put on inbetween shots and I would sometimes ask my agents to negotiate a heater be provided so I wouldn’t lose the client’s respect.

url

I promise never to complain after seeing Upton shooting on a boat in arctic waters with no heat machine. Can S.I. not afford one?

It should be noted that often times it’s necessary to work in less than ideal conditions. Summer clothing needs to be shot in the winter and wool winter clothing is needs to be shot in places where temperatures reach above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  It’s not that the other people on set are mean or inconsiderate or want to see models suffer. It’s simply a matter of enforcement and everyone has a different interest.

One day models will have a union that regulates shooting conditions but until that time they are at the mercy of agents, clients and photographers.

I’ll close with a big shout out to DKNY, a client that prioritizes the needs of models and compensates appropriately.  All the times I’ve worked for them, there was always a heat machine, good food, appropriate shooting conditions and every possible precaution was made to protect the wellbeing of the models.  I shot in the middle of winter wearing next to nothing and never once did my body shut down like it did following other shoots. So props to DKNY. And props to Kate Upton.

Boo on S.I. for putting anyone at risk of losing their sight and hearing to get a job done.

Kate Upton and Mercedes Benz Cause Mass Hysteria And Personal Confusion

Mercedes Benz hired Kate Upton to promote the new Benz CLA for their upcoming Superbowl commercial.

Every blog post, every news article, and most comments I’ve read take a similar tone.  This is tacky! This is porn! This is insulting to women! They did this JUST TO SELL CARS!

Yep. Yep. Yep. And of course sex is used to sell cars.

So why is the discussion currently taking place centered on whether or not Kate is a slut and Continue reading

Zooey Deschanel Wants You To Be F**king Awesome and Glamour Ain’t Having It!

They’re sure abusing using Zooey’s statement to advertise the rest of the messaging they’re selling.  I’m paying attention and I’ll probably buy the magazine… just to read the article of course. Bahahaha… I’m like every other women… I get sucked right the f**k in. (I feel like I can swear in this post cause Zooey did in a quote)

“I’m a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I’d look like them; it’s scary. For young girls, what does that say? You need to look this way to be successful? That’s not true. You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what’s acceptable is larger than what people believe,” that’s what Zooey Deschanel told a reporter for the February issue of Glamour.

Now ain’t that refreshing?  It’s a statement that holds true for all walks of life and I wish women could hear the message more often.  There’s room for you.  Yes, even you doubtful one.  The overwhelming majority of images we see are of photoshopped flawless size 0-6 women with perfect hair, makeup, nails, skin and wardrobe.  There’s nothing wrong with beautiful women or photoshop.  There’s nothing wrong with makeup artists, hair stylists and manicurists having work.  There’s nothing wrong with photoshop and editors and stylists having jobs.  I simply believe that we need to change the messaging.

I believe Zooey is on track and I wish more women could have access to her message of acceptance every day.

Just stop.  Stop putting crap in your faces and sucking out sections of your body.  You’re not supposed to look photoshopped in real life. Stop starving and start feeding yourself, feed your brain because you’ll need it. You already are beautiful.  Your body is meant to look, to be the size, to be the shape that is most comfortable for you.  It’s ok to have a line, a lump, a wrinkle, a grey hair and it’s ok to have a lot.  You’re supposed to have that extra fat on your stomach, your thighs and your butt; it looks good on you, it’s a sign of health.

o-ZOOEY-DESCHANEL-BODY-IMAGE-570

“I want to be a f**king feminist and wear a f**king Peter Pan collar.  So f**king what?” -Zooey Deschanel

Unfortunately that messaging gets lost in a make believe world of imagine and make believe fantasy, not such a bad thing in small doses .  This cover is the perfect example of what’s f**ked up about advertising and messaging.  Zooey’s affirming statement about anorexia, women and Hollywood is the smallest sized font on the page.  Surrounding it and jumping off the page are messages: “you’re scared of your vagina so we found out the answers for you” “dressing cute for work is more important than being prepared for work” “your hair sucks, here’s how to fix it.” “lots of men like to keep secrets from you so we’ve found out for you because you’re too f**king stupid to simply ask yourself and it’s probably because you’re scared of sex and speaking up”  And then there, right next to Zooey’s perfectly photoshopped and slimmed down arm is the final message, highlighted, outshining the truth. “Zooey knows about boys.”

You may not have to be anorexic to make it in Hollywood but if I’m paying attention correctly I need to be helpless, sexually confused, scared of men and know how to play dress up with my closet to make it in the real world.

Well… I feel like I”ll be pulling a Coulter continuing along this vein much longer.  I too love reading these magazines and looking at the images.  The intrigue of finding out something I may not know sucks me right in.  But when I put them down, I get that empty feeling inside.  I don’t feel inspired.  I don’t feel cute or sexy or informed.  I don’t feel beautiful or interesting or intelligent.  I feel like a failure.  I feel fat.  I feel false.  I feel, well, scared that I’ll never make it unless I lose another few pounds, pump up my lips, buy a new wardrobe and find a new group of bff’s to hang with.  Sadly, we don’t live in a world where feminist Peter Pan collars are successful.  Even Zooey is slimmed down, spruced up, photoshopped and talking about boys… or at least, that’s how she’s portrayed.

The message is lost.  There is nothing wrong with women.  There never was.  So my message to the magazines is please stop trying to find faults to fix.  I’m well trained to do that on my own.  What I need, especially today, is affirmative kick ass stories about women who rock and are making an actual difference in other people’s lives. I want you to go out and find ways to make me stronger not sexier, make me fitter not skinnier, sell me products that work, show me clothing I can afford, stop parading dolls and fantasies in front of me.  I didn’t like barbie when I was younger and I don’t like her now.  There’s a lot more ways to make money than making women feel like sh*t.  Can we all just agree to stop and find something else to write about?

Minnie Mouse Takes A Hit From Fashion

Minnie Mouse Pre-Makeover

Barneys NY has decided to partner with Disney and tell us an old-fashioned fashion centric cartoon makeover.  And where better to go than Disney Land!  Executives jumped a plane and headed to Happily Ever After Land to do some research for turning Minnie into a high fashion model worthy of high end designers this holiday season.  At no point, and this is where I must pause to exhale and wipe a flabberasted look off my face, did anyone with enough conviction surround it to risk losing a job say Continue reading

The Necessity of Risk

The risks I’ve taken in my life that have propelled me into the present day awesomeness I now live have never been based in financial or personal gain. They were based on necessity and an instinct to see or create the opportunity to fulfill it.

When people say “follow your heart” my insides roll their eyes. It’s vague and meaningless unless properly applied. Why is it so difficult to apply? It requires risk. We cannot make change in a vacuum of fear. We cannot create on our own. We need the support and the strength of others to grow.

Fear drives people. They don’t want to put themselves in a position of exposure whether it be financial, emotional or spiritual. People don’t like to be exposed. I can tell you from my experience, however, that the greatest gain I’ve ever received in my life is when I was completely exposed and lay myself vulnerable, willing and open to receive help.

I want to look at the first life risk I took and dissect what made it successful and what I had to overcome to fulfill the requirements and complete the change. My hope is that you’ll relate to the process and be able to apply it to some of the awesome changes going on in your life.

Feminist Models Bare all to Be Heard

Models aren’t known for having a voice.  We’re supposed to be silent images… stick images.  Sick sticks.  But we make a lot of money when most of our friends are still sitting in study hall.  So, it’s worth it.

The model above is angry about Continue reading

The Weight Debate Has Gone Plus Sized

Plus sized models aren’t new to the industry.  They’ve been getting quite a lot of attention lately and I think it’s a healthy discussion to have on the heels of the low bottom BMI controversy.

We all know that models are thin.  What I find interesting is that most people don’t realize exactly how thin they are.  Sure, we see them in magazines and on tv and they look thin but not particularly unhealthy.

Today I took measurements… in a department store.  Here’s the results:

Normal Store Mannequin:

Bust/Waist/Hips: 31-25-35 1/2

Height: 6’2

Leg Circumference: 15″

Inseam: 38″

Chanel Mannequin:

Bust/Waist/Hips: 31/25/35

Height: 8′

Leg Circumference: 19″

Inseam: 38″

Me (I wear a size 2-8 in retail clothing)

Bust/Waist/Hips: 34/27/37

Height: 5’9

Leg Circumference: 22 1/2″

Inseam: 34″

Average American Woman: According to the CDC and SizeUSA

Bust/Waist/Hips: 41/34/43

Height: 5’2

Leg Circumference: Wasn’t able to find the data

Inseam: 30″

Supermodel Standard:

Bust/Waist/Hips: 34/24/34

Height: 5’11

Leg Circumference: 16

Inseam: 34+

What’s surprising is even these perfectly proportioned mannequins used to display clothing for women to buy are too fat to model.  They would have to lose 5-10 pounds or 1/2-1 1/2 inches in some places to be able to fit the clothing required of them to wear.

It seems ridiculous and abusive and yes, perhaps it is.  Or is it?

Plus Magazine recently did an editorial depicting plus sized models nakedly, proudly displaying their curves alongside traditional runway models.  Along with the images were messages about the change a model’s body has had to go through to compete.

-Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today, she weighs 23% less.

- Ten years ago plus-size models averaged between size 12 and 18. Today the need for size diversity within the plus-size modeling industry continues to be questioned. The majority of plus-size models on agency boards are between a size 6 and 14, while the customers continue to express their dissatisfaction.

- Most runway models meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia.

- 50% of women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller.

It’s long been known and accepted that we’re a country obsessed with thinness.  The fantasy and the reality grows more and more disparate.  I wonder where the breaking point will be… is there a point at which women and models say enough?  Stop.   It’s no longer my job or responsibility to continue to walk this destructive path.

Maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe all the models I saw starving themselves were getting paid enough to make it ok.  I don’t think so.
