He’s gotten himself in trouble with the press. Jezebel has taken Jacobs to task over his practice of paying trade to models in exchange for their time. Seriously?!? People, Jezebel, this is nothing new. Practically the entire city of New York pays models in trade for runway shows.
Good grief, every good editorial girl knows that at some point in her career she’d better be prepared to stick in some fake breasts and give it a go over at Victoria’s Secret if she stands any chance of making real money.
(I’m not saying Karlie’s are fake, I’m just saying there comes a point in every editorial model’s career when that discussion takes place)
Those who do pay in monies pay so little it’s better to receive the clothing because most of the time the threads you take home are worth more than the paycheck offered.
I’ve modeled for Marc and Anna and all the rest who pay in trade and I’ve been happy to. I knew before I showed up at the casting that I’d be paid in trade and I showed up because there are 50 models lined up behind me ready to take my spot if I don’t. Besides, if I book Marc Jacobs, I’ll stand a better chance of booking more shows in Italy before I arrive, which means less castings and better day rates.
Every model knows the game. We don’t follow the same rules as the rest of the working country. Our profession is not defined. What we do and how to place a value on it is, unfortunately, largely in part due to who you work with not the quality of work you do.
I’m sure if agents decided to not send any girls on castings to runway shows unless the designers were paying, designers would pay to get quality girls.
